Questions
CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is a cannabinoid, a naturally occurring molecule, found in the cannabis plant. It interacts with your body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) which regulates a wide range of bodily functions: learning & memory, emotional processing, sleep, temperature control, appetite, and inflammatory & immune responses.
Like THC, CBD is a cannabinoid found in cannabis. However, unlike THC, CBD is non-intoxicating and will not get you high. It interacts with the nervous system (ECS) and it is psychoactive, meaning that it can affect mood and cognition, but not in the same way that THC does. It does not cause intoxication, euphoria, or sedation.
The Farm Bill was signed into law on December 20, 2018, officially removing CBD from the Controlled Substances Act. It is legal to possess, consume, and sell everywhere in the US. All hemp and hemp derivatives containing less than 0.3% THC are compliant with this law. At Slow Wave, all of the cannabinoids and terpenes in our products are 100% hemp-derived, and our products always contain less than 0.3% THC.
No, these are not the same. Hemp oil, also called hemp seed oil, is made by pressing hemp seeds into oil (similar to the process for making olive oil, or any other vegetable or seed oil). It is delicious, and healthy, but it does not contain CBD, because hemp seeds do not contain substantial amounts of CBD. CBD oil is made from extracting cannabidiol from the flower, leaves, and stalks of the cannabis (hemp) plant. Be careful with this: sometimes products containing hemp oil will be marketed as having the benefits of CBD when they don't actually contain any CBD at all.
Hemp and marijuana are both cannabis, but each variety is bred to contain a different cannabinoid profile; specifically, hemp is bred to contain less than 0.3% THC. In other words, marijuana refers to cannabis that contains more than 0.3% THC, hemp refers to cannabis that contains less than 0.3% THC, and cannabis is the scientific name for the single plant species behind both varieties.
CBD has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, which can in turn help quiet racing thoughts or other forms of 'mental noise' to promote focus and flow. CBD can be used as a tool to subdue inhibitions without clouding judgment, making it a safe and effective way to promote innovative thinking, experimentation, a sense of play, and willingness to fail, all of which can greatly benefit creative work. There are many other ways that CBD can contribute to improving creativity and cognitive performance, such as promoting better quality sleep.
Cannabidiol (CBD) interacts with your body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is known to regulate a range of critical functions: sleep, appetite, temperature control, immune function, pain response, mood, and more. CBD's ability to interact with several of the receptors that make up our body's ECS and nervous system gives it the potential to have profound effects. This is part of what makes CBD powerful, but it also poses a challenge for clinical research. It becomes more difficult to pinpoint correlations and causal relationships between CBD's influence on numerous receptors and the effects we tend to see reported on an anecdotal level and in initial scientific studies.
Taking CBD tinctures sublingually (under the tongue) delivers CBD directly to a mucous membrane, where it can be absorbed quickly into the bloodstream and take effect faster. Sublingual delivery of CBD is better than swallowing (eating) it (via gummies or capsules) because it doesn't have to enter the bloodstream through the digestive system, which takes longer, and can also break down some of the CBD, potentially degrading its efficacy.
The FDA has approved only one CBD product, a prescription drug to treat seizures associated with Lennox Gastaut syndrome (LGS), Dravet syndrome (DS), or tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) in people one year of age or older. According to federal regulations, we are not allowed to make specific claims about why people take CBD. We can only recommend using it for general, overall wellness & well-being. We encourage our customers to do their own research, to use CBD (and all other products) carefully, responsibly and intentionally, and to consult a physician or medical professional with any specific questions or concerns.
To start, 'full spectrum' refers to the concept of using the full profile of plant compounds (cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, vitamins, minerals) as opposed to extracting one specific cannabinoid or compound. The benefit is the entourage effect: all the naturally occurring compounds in the plant work together synergistically to deepen their overall benefits and efficacy. Our tinctures (Hotel Flowers and Dream State) are made with full spectrum distillate from hemp plants with less than 0.3% THC. This means they contain CBD, trace amounts of THC, and also other beneficial compounds found in the cannabis plant, including other minor cannabinoids, terpenes and other plant compounds mentioned above. Our gummies (SupraHalo and Trust Fall) are made with distilled full spectrum hemp extract. Our topicals (Afterglow and Illumine) are made with full spectrum hemp flower extract. Our night line products (Dream State and Trust Fall) also contain CBN isolate. CBN is a minor cannabinoid, and existing research suggests that it promotes relaxation and intensifies sleep-inducing effects of other cannabinoids.
Yes - Slow Wave ingestible products (Hotel Flowers, Dream State, SupraHalo & Trust Fall) are 100% vegan, gluten free, and made with organic ingredients wherever possible. We do currently use organic beeswax in our topicals (Afterglow & Illumine) which may not be aligned with some vegans. However, we're in the process of considering alternatives for future batches.
